The Hand Pan: A Hybrid Music Instrument

Abstract

The hand pan is a relatively recent innovation in music instruments. It is a cross between the steel pan (steel drum) from Trinidad, the Nigerian udu drum, and an Indian claypot drum (ghatam). A unique aspect of the hand pan is that it is designed to play pitched notes, musical scales, and melodies using only hands. Prior to the hand pan, there was no instrument designed to create pitched notes and melodies using only hands. Hence, it is a remarkable innovation. The presenter introduces the hand pan by demonstrating its various aspects followed by a performance.
