Abstract
This focused discussion will be dedicated to illustrate a transcultural and transdisciplinary approach to the other mediated by dialogue. This approach takes inspiration from the philosophy of dialogue - a branch of contemporary Anglo-European philosophy founded by Martin Buber - and from transdisciplinarity - according to the perspective proposed by Basarab Nicolescu, contemporary Romanian physicist and philosopher. In this view, dialogue becomes a space of relationship, rather than for relationship among, across and beyond both cultures and disciplines. “Among”, “across” and “beyond” are the meanings of the Latin prefix trans, of “transcultural” and “transdisciplinary,” according this perspective. During these several years, I investigated this approach mainly through academic teaching, with the additional aim to consider dialogue as a space of relationship which may be applied also beyond the academic context, and, far more broadly, to everyday life: dialogue and relationship may become a “lifestyle”. As the participants to the Conference will be scholars drawn from different cultures (thus, countries, languages, traditions, religions, beliefs, for instance) and disciplinary fields (thus, backgrounds, and research topics), we might have the opportunity to build a space of relationship mediated by dialogue. The aim of this focused discussion, in fact, is to apply what we are going to describe, therefore theory and praxis will be together in creating this space of relationship. I will shortly introduce a few key terms of the transcultural and transdisciplinary approach, which may allow the participants to engage dialogue among, across and beyond our cultures and fields of study.
