The English Sonnet and the Rebirth of Antiquity

Abstract

The Renaissance Movement which had started in Italy and had swept all Europe until it made a tardy entry to England brought a new spirit and life to English Literature. The rebirth turned the clock back to the antiquity, specifically to Ancient Greece and Rome. The Renaissance men of letters showed great interest in the language, arts, science, philosophy, and literature. In English Literature, the appearance of a new form of poem called sonnet came with the Renaissance movement. The new form originated in Italy, by Petrarch was welcomed by the English poets like Wyatt, Howard, Sidney, Spenser, and Shakespeare. This paper explores the traces of antiquity in the Renaissance sonnet in England. The sonnets by English sonneteers are analysed in terms of their links to antiquity. The specific points made by the poets addressing language, literature, and philosophy in Ancient Greece and Rome are considered.
