Violence Against Women in Philippine Teleseryes

Abstract

Media has been proven as one of the influential and strongest factors in honing a country’s culture. Violence against women is evident in every television drama or “teleseryes.” This study was conducted in order to recognize the existence of violence in Philippine teleseryes. The central point of the study is to consider the presented violence against women in Philippine teleseryes by identifying the demographic, character role of the perpetrator and victim and the forms, level and prevalent acts of violence against women. The study used content analysis as research procedure by watching and analyzing selected teleseryes of the two biggest networks in the Philippines, ABS-CBN and GMA. Through vast review, researchers select “Contessa”, “Hindi Ko Kayang Iwan Ka”, “Kambal Karibal”, “Sana Dalawa ang Puso”, “The Blood Sisters”, and “FPJ’s Ang Probinsyano” as teleseryes to be analyzed. A coding guide and coding sheet designed by the researchers were used in gathering data of the selected teleseryes watched in the online streaming site HOOQ and IWanTV. The results showed that in six teleseryes there has been undeniable violence against women in its content. Female, middle-aged, and upper class was mostly the perpetrator of violence against women while the victims were classified as middle-aged and in upper class as well. The relationships of character role of the victims to the perpetrators are commonly strangers or the victim’s rival. Upon extensive analysis, it was found that psychological violence was the prevalent violence against women and the level of violence was identified as mild.
