The Body as a Work of Art: Beautiful Affliction

Abstract

Collaborative artists expose hidden beauty in the theatrical image found in suffering and disease through costume design, choreography, and music. Illness is revealed at the cellular level utilizing photographs from Hidden Beauty: Exploring the Aesthetics of Medical Science by Norman Baker and Christine A. Iacobuzio-Donahue. Focusing on the Greek ideal of beauty, gowns are constructed utilizing digital photos of diseases such as lymphoma and meningioma. This work examines the role of the tragic image in the performing arts and the merging of Art and Science. The author evaluates the role of the image and disease in molecular disease.
