New Directions in Asian Humanities: Cross-cultural Perspectives

Abstract

This paper builds on our recent book, The Humanities in Contemporary Chinese Contexts (Springer, 2016), that brings together the opinions of ten renowned humanities scholars on the state of he humanities in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Mainland China. Employing philosophical and literary analyses of key terms such as filial piety, loneliness, and value this paper examines how new understandings of such key concepts from a cross-cultural humanities can build a new humanities perspective. The paper also reports from a long-term research project examining the value of the humanities in the Hong Kong context.
