Adjusting to Emergent Social Realities in Post Apartheid Sport and the Socio-cultural Transformation in a Democratic South Africa: The Stakeholders, Narratives, and Perceptions of Transformation Policy in Sports

Abstract

The democratic South African Society is battling to come to term with impacts and legacies of apartheid after the nation resolved to put the past behind and chart a new course for the rainbow nation of a new South Africa in 1994. In spite of strides made by Nelson Mandela and the ANC government to redress the injustices of the past historical oppression, we discovered that there are more emerging issues arising from the policy, to still birth a new nation void of the past, that is equitable, fair and just to all irrespective of race, gender and sexual orientation. The current study on transformation policy implementation in football and rugby survey, explored and discovered from the stakeholders narrative and perception of policy implementation in sport, to have policy gaps and challenges that are virtually impeding development and social transformation of sports and the country at large. The outcome of the study shown that there is still wide gap of social inequity as it previously existed, mutual suspicions, lack of political will, and overriding social issues affecting the implementation of transformation policy in football and rugby in South Africa. The survey, was conducted in four out of the nine provinces, with a total population sample of 1,010 determined by the used of purposely and randomly selection techniques. Mixed method designs was adopted for concurrent data collection and analysis. The study used Nvivo and Spss analytical tools to arrive at conclusions.
