Abstract
For most of the 1970s, contemporary Malay theatre practitioners sought to “decolonise” local theatre and to infuse their works with a Malay identity. At the end of the decade, however, a handful of Malay playwright-directors began exploring Islamic theatre. They include Mana Sikana, Ismail Kassan, Nordin Hassan, and of late Dinsman. This essay, which is in two parts, first deals with the aspirations and apprehensions of introducing the genre of Islamic theatre in Malaysia. Using the discussion as a preamble, it then traces the tribulations of Dinsman’s quest for such a genre, a first in Malaysia, through a detailed study of of Theatre Prophet Yusuf, to be staged in November 2018.
