Abstract
Ottoman Divan poetry is often referred to as a practice distant from daily life and people, as well as being imitative and incomprehensible. In this paper, my aim is three-fold. First is to challange established perspectives on Ottoman literary tradition. Secondly, to unsettle certain perceptions on Divan literature by underlining the cultural hybridity that is visible in majority of the forms. Finally, I offer a new way of seeing which aims at shedding light on gender roles as represented in Ottoman lyric poetry, that is definitely homoerotic in nature.
