Abstract
Corruption is Nigeria’s biggest challenge. It is clear to every citizen that the level of corruption in the country is very high. It is found in every sector of society including politics, health, education, sports, immigration, armed forces, etc. There is every possibility of observing corrupt practices throughout the country. Nigeria, which is the most populated country in Africa, has been ranked high in corruption by Transparency International and other notable organizations that monitor corrupt practices around the world. High corruption rankings also consistently affect many Nigerians who migrate to foreign countries, as foreigners have the perception that since Nigeria is corrupt, so are all Nigerians. This paper examines the effectiveness of the mass media in curbing corruption in Nigeria. It observes that the mass media can fight corruption in three different ways: uncovering corrupt acts through investigative journalism; giving wide and frequent coverage to corruption cases; and initiating anti-corruption campaigns and programmes. It further suggests that journalists should be well trained in areas of investigative journalism and that government should support mass media and give them freedom to adequately fight corruption in Nigeria.
