The Salasaka Women, a History of Exogenous and Endogenous Colonization : Living in a Poverty Cycle with Limited Political Participation

Abstract

The present analysis is based on research of the political participation of the indigenous Salasaka women of Ecuador. Critical theories of the South frame the study, which reveals that low political participation is the result of exogenous and endogenous colonization. Limited options based on socially constructed gender roles, poverty, poor education, and lack of coverage of basic necessities, prevent access to claiming rights through political participation.
