The Invisible Women Project: The Use of the Art of Devising as a Tool for Empowering the Feminine Voice

Abstract

Devising, a form of collective creation, is a style of theatre used within the field of theatre education. Devising is used to create original plays with a group of devisors and at least one facilitator. This paper explores the concepts of masculine and feminine identities, and argues for the use of devising as an empowerment of the feminine voice in women. The argument is supported by “The Invisible Women” project, an originally devised play by a group of Emerson College students who identify as women.
