Relationship between Components of Critical Thinking Disposition and Social Acceptance in Iranian Students

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between components of critical thinking disposition (innovation, cognitive maturity, and intellectual engagement) and social acceptance. The study was a descriptive-correlation research. Among undergraduate students of Islamic Azad University, Marvdasht Branch, 302 students (164 female and 118 male) were chosen by multistage cluster sampling method and completed the Social Desirability Scale and the Critical Thinking Disposition Questionnaire. The results of multiple regression analysis showed that among components of critical thinking disposition, innovation and cognitive maturity components positively and significantly predicted social acceptance. The findings indicated that individuals with innovation and cognitive maturity components of critical thinking disposition, gather available information and viewpoints about a given issue, regardless of any bias. They avoid prejudices and hasty decision and analyze the dynamic and consequences of society’s norms and values for both themselves and the other people. In a new manner, on the one hand they attempt to have correct beliefs and values and make the best decision about acceptance the predefined norms and values, and on the other hand they respect society’s norms and expectations and match their behaviors with them as much as possible.
