Cultural Construction of Street Children by BeritaSatu Television in Indonesia

Abstract

This study explores how the mass media highlighted a group of street children in Bandung and Jakarta as a portrait of the creative community with cultural differences in their approach to life. The concept used is about cross-cultural communication that the collectivist cultures of Indonesia and harmonization of different cultures in society in everyday life. Data were collected by interviews, observations, literature equipped watch video two news in TV and observed for two months. Constructive research methods using mass media to analyze the two video displayed by the TV media of BeritaSatu on March 9, 2015 and on May 8 2015. The results showed that there are different ways to live life. A new culture for the street children studied was not the same as society’s ways. BeritaSatu TV as a medium of Indonesia’s pay TV network picked it up with a positive image to the exclusion of their bad habits. Mass media became a tool of construction that ordinary people can accept cultural differences and habits of life lived in a community of street children. Although in principle the fear of street children has to be rejected, but in general public in Indonesia, the street children have achievements, self reliance, and contribute to the environment
