Using Dance as a Language in the Architecture of Social Justice Education, Awareness, and Advocacy

Abstract

In 2010, Dance Professor Andrew Carroll was approached by The Florida Department of Health to develop a dance video intended to be utilized as a new vehicle to depict correct procedures of effectively cleaning a hospital room in reference to C-Diff, a spore responsible for numerous infections in the hospital setting. The intended video was geared towards the idea of producing a preliminary overview of information in a format that used no language yet could illustrate initiatives necessary for educational purposes. The video project inspired two additional commissions from the FDOH, and served as a spin off point to use this medium to educate on the social justice issues of bullying, dating violence, suicide awareness, and human sex-trafficking by again using dance as the primary language to highlight researched strategies for awareness and advocacy of these issues. Through discussions with advocating organizations, the videos were produced and lauded by worldwide organizations who advocate on behalf of these plights.
