Analysing Architectural Narrative in 21st Century Museums View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Ihjaz Zubair Pallakkan Tharammal,  Lakshmi S Rajamani

Storytelling has been an important part of human life throughout history. It allows communities to unlearn, learn and relearn. There are different mediums of storytelling that are used in an individual's day to day life. For instance, ideas are shared through oral stories, comics, music, art, architecture etc. This paper explores the concept of architectural narrative and its significance in conveying messages and stories. The research analyses the potential of museums and the importance of incorporating architectural narratives in museums, particularly in 21st century India. The research is also an exploratory and comparative analysis of narrative elements like semiotics, symbolism, spatial structure etc. and finally derives strategies to design spaces that speak to the users.

Re-thinking Design Education View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Mariusz Wszołek

Nowadays, the design education system is faced with the challenge of redefining the scopes, possibilities and methods of educating future designers (Meyer & Norman 2020a). The complexity of the world around us, both in the technological and geopolitical dimensions, as well as goals connected with climate protection and public health, creates completely new challenges for the practice of design. The current discussion of the design community on re-designing design education seems to be of key importance, although we feel that it is closed towards an external perspective - interdisciplinarity, which is emphasized at every step in a theoretical sense, but not widely used in this ongoing discussion. In the framework of a joint project of Volda University College and SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities, we are initiating a project aimed at changing the way designers are taught, which could translate into a new, reflective design paradigm based on so-called lean development approach (Wszołek & Płuchowska 2021). What is needed is a study program that takes into account the issue of interdisciplinarity, based on the synthesis of scientifically grounded design doctrines - human-centred design, participatory design, universal design, sustainable design or environment-oriented design. Design schools have an unprecedented opportunity to distinguish a completely new area of teaching, focused on educating moderators and animators of design processes.

The Impact of Design Community Outreach Programs on Society : An Evaluations of The Effectiveness of Art Residency Programs in Saudi Arabia View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Renad Al Sekait,  Afsina Abbasi

This academic study focuses on the effectiveness of community impact in the design field through the engagement in residencies, workshops, and forums provided by educational institutions such as Misk Art Institute a non-profit cultural organization that empowers local artists through an interconnected ecosystem of support, expertise, and education. The study presents an evaluation of the effectiveness of Misk art residency program. This study focuses on the emerging design market in the Middle East with a special focus on empowering female designers. It is important for female designers to be connected to the field of art and design through community engagement, participating in different exhibitions, conferences, and publications. This research adopted an action research approach to explore one art residency program in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia offered by Misk Art Institute starting on September 2022 and will run for thee months. The program has been running for the past five years supporting early career designers by offering access to funding, mentorship, master classes, workshops, studio spaces, and exposure to audiences through a showcase and publication to support early career artist start their journey. The objective of this study is to understand the perceived community impact of art residency programs on empowering female designers in the field. This study aims to enhance early career development for designers in the Middle East art market, to raise the profile and visibility of art residency programs, and to enlighten designers about the art market opportunities in Saudi Arabia.

Smart Textile Products in the Field of Sport: A New Framework View Digital Media

Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Bernardo Providência,  Helder Carvalho,  Daniel Vieira

This work proposes a new model for e-textile clothing design for designers, engineers, and programmers. Through the application of the Double Diamond and the User-Centered Design models in the design of smart clothing for cycling and fencing, it was possible to develop a new model that combines both processes. This model emphasizes the multidisciplinary nature of the theme, leads to dialogue between disciplines, helps to solve problems, and at the same time, maps the different stages of research and development. The new model diverges in three aspects (design, technology, and feedback) and after this stage it converges in the design of a product. Whenever necessary, the process allows going back one or more steps, to reposition the design process so that the solution is successful. The research topic is drawn from distant areas such as clothing design, electronic textile technologies, and visual feedback. It allows referencing the knowledge generated in the different stages of the design process, from theoretical studies to the creation of practical studies, including collaboration with different professionals throughout the process. The model results in an interaction that involves six steps: 1) Discover problems; 2) Define opportunities in discoveries; 3) Specify design, technology and feedback requirements with the user; 4) Develop an idea for a complete design; 5) Evaluate the design proposal, technology and feedback with the user; finally, 6) Implement the solution with the user.
