Using Design for More Effective Storytelling at School and at Home

Abstract

The connection between design and storytelling is more vital than ever in a world where you barely have a second to get and keep someone’s attention. This is true for adults and children. When adding design to these stories we all can become more than just listeners. By being more involved during and/or after the story, we connect to it much better. And as a result, we can have a better experience. This session mostly discusses the ideas of shadow puppets and a physical side to storytelling. Why? They are remarkably simple to make but demonstrate that detail is not always necessary for superior design and storytelling. It shows how strong shapes and colors can be, so even those with minimal art skills can enjoy. Being able to show a comprehensive epic like “Feathers of Fire” using shadow puppets can help children and adults that they do not need to be an artist to be creative and tell a captivating story.
