Abstract
Conceptual design development represents a major stage in product design management. Bridging the worlds of theory and practice, a model for concept development that fuses ingredients from the former with a process from the latter is introduced. Based on a literature review, a model of conceptual design processing is projected on a theoretical construct of a language of architecture to derive a new hybrid conceptual model that aims to help designers transform their concepts into products. The new model has figurative and operative representations to help visualize its structure and apply its process respectively. The hybrid model is applied in a design studio and is illustrated by examples to explain its applicability. The feedback about its application seems to support its adoption as an additional tool in design management.
