Design for Innovation in the Digital Learning Experience : The Emblematic Case Study of the Coop

Abstract

The Maker Movement, a young and far-reaching phenomenon, has recently achieved global notoriety for its important economic, educational, and social implications. The structure of contemporary society, a hypercomplex tangle of connections and interconnections, has made possible the considerable diffusion of the Movement, which finds its strengths in the Open Source philosophy, the World Wide Web, and the adjacent Web Generation, the principles of Levynian collective intelligence, the active approach to the technological medium, and the search for a new identity in the process of production (and creation). It is also important to consider the role of The Maker Movement as “a knowledge building community” in parallel with the phenomenon of democratisation made possible by digital artisans and the consequent development of an active citizenship in the perspective of the Key Competences of European matrix. The paper reports on the results of the experience of a new educational approach of digital education, which is based on the introduction of the Maker Mindset into the reality of out-of-school education. The methods and tools implemented by the DENSA Cooperative, an association whose mission is to combine the elements that characterise the Movement with the educational reality of out-of-school activities, within the “Our Heritage in 3D” project, are presented. The paper therefore presents the methodology used in the development of the product, the results achieved and the possible implications that can have in the kids sector. The role of design in terms of tools, methods, and support for education in schools is emphasized.
