How to Learn Design Skills through Soft Skills Training: Best Practices from a Latin American Company

Abstract

According to World Economic Forum and Linkedin Learning, the future of work will require new skills (“soft skills”) in professionals. Some of the most important skills will be: problem solving, effective communication, creativity, emotional intelligence, collaboration, among others. According to research, the mastery of these skills is decisive to professionals in order to keep their job and face the new challenges brought by the pandemic. Moreover, for design education experts, many of these “soft skills” are essential during the design process. Therefore, we can infer that people who are training their “soft skills” are also training their “design skills”. Career-Goal is a company that provides experience-based #powerskills training for professional people in LATAM. Our definition of #powerskills is “soft-skills who have the power to increase your effectiveness, improve your mindset, and transform you in a personal way. In December 2019, we finished our first pilot with 10 professional people. The #powerskill trained during a program of 6 weeks was “Effective Communication”. The current evolution of the company is informed by what is learned in the UM Design Science program The present workshop has two main objectives: 1) Show the methodology used by the company Career Goal for their programs and trainings, and 2) Make a short demo of their methodology with the participants. In the first part (10min), we present the motivation, methodology, results, and conclusions obtained during the pilot with 10 participants. In the second part (35min), we’ll practice how to communicate effectively during a simulated co-creation sessions.
