Starman - Innovative Stand for Speakers: Design Research Complete Case Study: Idea - Product - Patent - Marketing

Abstract

The idea of a new stand for musical speakers was born from the observation that a traditional stand gives an image of a construction yard to every kind of stage. This can be an incongruity if we consider that many musical situations are set up in location of prestige and elegance. The research was specially focused on the elimination of internal tubes, beams and shaft: this generated a new innovative blocking and structural system that was patented. The new stand, called Starman (both as a tribute to David Bowie and because of the star-shape of the main component) has five legs to give more stability and safety and is free on the internal part between the legs. This innovation opened the way to other features, in particular an accessory to place musicians’ personal effects or small stage devices (earphone, in-ear monitor, small amplifiers, …) that usually haven’t a dedicated space on the stage. The project covers all the activity of a contemporary designers: the initial idea, 2D drawings, 3D drawings, prototypes, revision of the project, late prototypes, patent drawings and procedures, first series of final products, photo set and post production, video set and post production, website, and brochure.
