Lessons from 25 Years Managing a Design Company: What Is Work?

Abstract

This text draws on the author’s experience in leading a graphic design company and is focused on the managerial aspects of the design practice: how to find work, how to develop it, how to present it, how to make it matter in real world, how to evaluate the results, and get more work. The review uses my personal experience provide some insights about what communication design is for and its role in today’s society. It was written with a reflective writing process, considering how my professional experience can be used in a transformative way. It intends to make state-of-the-art knowledge available to understand the transformations occurring due to automation and globalization, the disappearance of jobs at a global level, the future of professions, and the future of the communication design. With this framework it offers insights about design management in a small scale company and possible futures for professional practice.
