Effective Approaches of Interdisciplinary Collaboration in Basic Design Course

Abstract

Educators from a variety of disciplines started to recognize the importance and value of interdisciplinary collaboration. “Interdisciplinary” is commonly used in today’s education field. When it comes to design education, this paradigm change brings a new challenge: more and effective pedagogy has to be reframed to help students face these new challenges. Thus, how to provide more effective training for design foundation curriculum has become a vital challenge among the design educators. The study examines different types of design exercises to explore the challenges and identifying possible effective approaches of interdisciplinary collaboration in the design foundation courses. This paper presents observations of the different approaches taken by multidisciplinary teams through identifying and understanding the outcomes within course projects. As a result, the multi-faced levels of interdisciplinary collaboration methods are identified and discussed in this article.
