Fashion in 2050: Dialogues Between Past and Future

Abstract

The increasing speed of technological development aligned to crucial sustainability issues leads the academy and industry to reflect on possible directions that fashion could take in the next decades. This paper starts from the hypothesis that while technology applied to fashion will be widespread, second-hand and vintage clothing will be more accessible and valuable thanks to sustainability concerns and changes in consumption habits. This study speculates about fashion in 2050. Moving beyond the mere functional aspects regarding fashion and technology, it intends to explore the arena of subjectiveness and symbolic connections between fashion and human values in a digital era. Vintage clothing could become a multidimensional time-space object, bringing notions of nostalgia, but also provoking our imagination towards the future. Through a speculative design approach and articulated qualitative research methods, this work intends to arouse critical reflection fashion in the future. To conduct this work, the researcher explores qualitative and participatory methods, to spark debate about how the human relationship to fashion will be challenged in the face of new technological possibilities.
