María Isabel Grañén Porrúa studied art history at Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico and completed her PhD in the same discipline at the University of Seville, Spain. Her field of study is engraving and the books of New Spain of the XVI century. She has published several works about the history of the book, printing, and engravings in Mexico during the viceregal era. She was director of the Graphic Arts Institute of Oaxaca and of the Centro Fotográfico Álvarez Bravo, institutions created by Francisco Toledo.

Dr. Grañén is president of the Alfredo Harp Helú Foundation in Oaxaca, which promotes various ecological, sports, educational, and cultural projects, including the Museum of Philately of Oaxaca, the BS Children's Library, the Henestrosa Library, the City House, and the Textile Museum of Oaxaca. In addition, she is president of the civil association Support for the Development of Archives and Libraries of Mexico. 

She has organized various exhibitions and seminars on art history, the history of Mexico, and historical cities. She is a member of the Editorial Board of Acervos, a newsletter of the Archives and Libraries of Oaxaca. Dr. Grañén also promotes reading programs as well as the rescue of archives and libraries in Mexico. She is director of the Francisco de Burgoa Library of UABJO, one of the oldest ancient collections in Mexico that is also included in the Memory Register of the World by UNESCO.

Dr. Grañén is a member of the Honorary Advisory Council of the National Coordination of Historical and Cultural Memory of Mexico.
