Paper Presentation in a Themed Session
Ekaterina Shafray

This paper is devoted to the discussion of the meaning of creativity (in theory and practice) in the design education. This paper presents the approaches of teaching and learning computer graphics with undergraduate students with several creative design assignments. The intention of learning is to provide skills based on both 1) design communication (from text to diagram and visualization; oral presentation of design); 2) use of digital technology (ability to configure and create objects in a 3D space). This paper reviews the recent relevant literature on creativity in architecture, and shows the examples of creative assignments that require the analysis of context (with the site located on campus), selection the level of details, and defining the design concepts prepared by students. It argues on the necessity of consideration of local conditions and context while studying architecture and continues a discussion on the ways for expanding creativity, originality and practicality in architecture profession and education. The implications, such as similarities and difference of design education in different countries, cultural backgrounds impact for understanding architecture, consistency of design education for students, problems of communication in design, are discussed in local and broad perspectives.

What is design and can how design help improve society? In the field of graphic design, the designers use their power to solve visual problems in the most creative ways, but what is the overall outcome? How can graphic design improve the way we live our everyday lives? In the era of massive consumption and environmental and visual pollution, and information chaos, what is the urgent role of universities and educators? Can design education help? This paper is about an ongoing project that is been applied in the course “Design Research” in the Proficiency in Arts (Doctorate) Graphic Design program in Institute of Fine Arts Anadolu University. Anadolu University has years of experience in the Open Education systems which have been growing widely since 1982, delivering higher education in Turkey and in 19 countries, currently holding 58 degree programs and many non-degree programs. In the project, the aim is to clearly and very basically communicate what design is, through the well established channels of Open Education programs. The target audience for this education is the non-designer. The aim of the project is to elevate the knowledge of the public about what design is and what is does, starting with the clients that require design, small and medium sized enterprises and government institutions. Instead of education of more professional designers, the education of the non-designer about design and graphic design culture will provide new ways of thinking and enhance society and environment.

The approach used to achieve the learning target is design thinking with the stages of empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test. The method used is service learning, which synergizes the learning process through the process of direct interaction and service to the community. The communities selected as the target partners are small and medium entrepreneurs who are building branding efforts and still need help to strengthen the media branding in the form of commercial space in the city of Surabaya and surrounding areas.
