An Appraisal of People's Perception Towards Earth Buildings in Jalingo, Nigeria

Abstract

The lingering shortage of affordable housing in Nigeria has been attributed to the high cost of building materials. The desire for imported building materials has impacted negatively on the people’s perception of the locally available building materials. Earth is a cheap and ready building material which requires little further processing. This study investigates the perceptions of the urban populace regarding earth buildings. As part of the research, a random sampling technique was adopted whereby twenty residents of the study area were interviewed to gain their views on earth housing living condition. In addition, a questionnaire survey based on the findings from the case study was administered to practicing architects, structural engineers, and housing developers with the goal of collecting data for a baseline overview of the attitudes of the stakeholders in the Nigerian construction industry toward earth buildings. The findings show that urban residents associate earth buildings with poverty and low social status. On their part, the professionals are reluctant to specify earth materials in their projects because of the supposed technical deficiencies and performance limitations associated with it. This focused discussion will consider how architects, housing developers, and policy makers can be more involved in the promotion of earth materials for the provision of affordable social housing.
