Data Physicalization: Spatial Data Visualization in the Public Space

Abstract

A well designed data visualization helps us to read information intuitively by noticing differences in colors, shapes and orientation, rather than by reading numbers or words. Nowadays we are primarily accustomed to view diagrams over newspaper pages, reports or studies. In my work, I use urban spatial elements in a public space to bring forward important quantitative information. Creating an physical experience I call “Data_Physicalization” to be read by climbing, touching, walking, etc. This showcase presents some projects designed at my studio and that are infographic intervention in public spaces that are now undergoing a process of change. As a new way of introducing information about these changes to the public, urban elements (railings, stairs, tiles) are transformed into real life diagrams. By producing an accurate 3D representation of the relationship between numbers, I am striving to convey a story and give an additional insights behind the numbers.
