Changing Forms of Kalamkari and Its Aesthetics: Narrative Craft from Srikalahasti Region

Abstract

Indian traditional folk art/craft is hundreds of years old, preserved in oral and visual form. It is believed that study of Indian traditional art/craft can unravel many branches of knowledge and can be a source to understand history and changes occurring in societies. However, in the present scenario, there are drastic transformations undergoing in traditional art/craft seen in the source of inspiration, the method used, techniques applied, and usage. This research, by focusing on a particular type of traditional craft ‘Kalamkari’ and within it particularly ‘Srikalahasti style’, explores the important relationship between space and craft. In other words, the aim is to develop an understanding of the significant association between ‘Interior Space’ and ‘Design’. In order to unravel this rather unexplored aspect, the study first undertakes a detailed literature review comprising of books, journals, articles, thesis, and online websites. Next, the study undertakes research to understand the importance of space and the crucial relation it has with the craft by analyzing the relation of space and craft in ancient and present times; analyzing the changes occurring in Kalamkari in present times in order to understand the changing relationship between space and craft.
