Bringing 'the State of the World' and 'the State of Design' Closer Together: Using Visual Communication as a Tool to Extend the Philosophy of Food beyond its Existing Narrative in the Urban Context of the Western Cape, South Africa

Abstract

This may seem relevant to only a few of us, but in actual fact we are living yet another crisis. We are plundering food sources and living a ‘food lifestyle’ that in many ways is broken; diets have drastically shifted, the natural environment is comprised, and farming has become based on demand rather than necessity. This provocation calls for the dire need to re-look at the food process, as well as the live that it provides. As a Graphic Designer, I investigate the processes involved in the food we eat and the food we choose to disregard. I break the food life-cycle into three stages; ROOT, ROT & FRUITFUL. I take the observer on the food life-cycle journey from seed to growth, to decay and back to growth to showcase that any point of the cycle is as fundamental and fascinating as another. In journals, food-inspired ceramics, rotten food photography and fabric designs, I develop a strong and bold voice that navigates us toward more ethical and environmentally modes of conduct. I want to take people back to the true value of food, reveal the importance of food cultivation by repositioning food in people’s minds and show how important the human being is in this sort of project. We hold infinite responsibility in setting the future narrative. I provide context, solutions and encourage people with the given design deliverables. I show how powerful we are and can be, by changing our ways and effectively utilising a more sustainable food-system.
