Managing the Specialized Uniform Design Project for Oil and Gas Industry of India: Design Management in Developing a Specialized Garment

Abstract

This paper explores the design management strategy followed in developing a specialized uniform design project for workers of the oil and gas industry as an effective safety solution. In the oil and gas industry workers perform byproducts production, storage, and dispatch work in a hazardous environment. The safety concerns of the workers in such an environment are fire, static charge, work-wear ergonomic issue, and overall comfort for humid conditions in usual working circumstances. The perilous environment and past incidence of fire in the workplace has opened up the direction for safe and specialized work-wear for the oil and gas industry. Workers now protect lives and provide adequate escape time at the fire and other accidents without wearing the fire proximity suit. The specialized garment will provide new safety. This paper highlights the design management strategy for executing the project in data gathering such as oil and gas industry environmental study, safety concerns of workers, concept development of work wear, identifying the right material for work wear, sample and prototype development, and finalizing the design specification for specialized garment for sourcing and procurement.
