Considering the Role of Culture in Improving Effectiveness of Design Education Using Activity theory as Theoretical Framework

Abstract

The goal of this research is to show how the concept of culture can facilitate design education. There are three perspectives that show how to teach designer-ly ways of thinking, intuition and other related factors for improving deisgn education. One of the ways to become a science is to teach it. Something that is not teachable, is not scientific at all. That is the reason why pedagogy helps with knowledge production. However there’s a challenge in design education that requires transition between cultures. When we are talking about culture, we mean design education based on intercultural approach - and our aim is to map different aspects of culture and their role in improving design education. Our hypothesis is: Technology can be used as mediation and facilitate intercultural communication, interdisciplinary communication, and intergenerational communication. To reach this goal a new definition of technology needs to be introduced because technology in this context is interface - and the interface is a form of representation, or embodiment. Therefore the questions which form of embodiment are helpful in order to enable this communication occur. Another aspect we consider is the role of intuition and technology can facilitate intuitive communication in transferring values.
