ReVeDA - Research Vectors through Design and Art: Emerging Design Research and Practices through Cumulus Community

Abstract

The research intends to give its contributions to the field of design research. If compared to other scientific fields, research in design has a young history and as a consequence, it has a problematic acknowledgment within the academic institution and the society. Even that, the discipline of design is born around an investigation of its processes, methods, and practices. The first debate, in 1970 was focused on trying to identify which were the methods of design, later in 1990s, the cultural discussion was shifted towards the approaches, and particularly towards the ways of doing research. Christopher Frayling in 1993 firstly proposed the classification of the three categories of research: research for art and design, research through art design, research about art and design. The categories investigate the way of doing research in art and design and lay the foundations between the research and the practice. This paper shows the results of the international survey ReVeDA, launched through the Cumulus Schools Community. The project ReVeda (Research Vectors through Design and Art) wants to draw a global map on research in design and the arts and New Media. The survey shows the research fields of interest, the outcomes activities, the approaches, the tools, and the methodologies, but also its actors, its financing, and the complex networks emerging among them, in order to give a picture of the contemporary identities of design.
