Visualising Cultural Context Through Typographic Design

Abstract

In the analysis of historical and cultural studies, context refers to factors those surrounded an art piece or literature. It was recognised as a kind of background information for understanding. They allowed us to analyze the messages delivered by them. However, there was limited understanding of what the designers and creatives experienced in their time and reacting to or reacting against. In this study, a case study of Hong Kong typography was conducted for illustrating how cultural context influenced the designers and creatives and eventually influenced the typography development. Based on a literature review of Hong Kong development and changes of typographic design in Hong Kong, the features of Hong Kong typographic design in different periods of history were analysed. This is a preliminary study to explore how the cultural context influences local typographic design development.
