Artificial Intelligence + Design: Design in the Context of Mutating Design Disciplines, Tools, and Practices

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) capabilities are growing at an unprecedented rate. As these systems permeate our society, they are infiltrating all industries and economic sectors, augmenting and emulating human intelligence to perform functions that have a wide range of applications. There is no doubt that AI systems will have an impact on the future of work as we enter an era that is shaped by an emerging workforce of intelligent machines. This is not exclusive of design. All facets of design are inextricably linked to technological advancement and the resulting economic, political, and cultural structures that shape our society. As artificial intelligence systems are embedded in the products, services, and systems that designers create and the tools that designers use to shape the artificial (physical and digital) world, the professional practice will evolve. As a result, designers face increasing social responsibilities. Technically and ethically, future products, services and systems will have to perform on an unprecedented level of transparency. To better understand and forecast the convergence of AI and design, this project summarizes an investigation of the evolving relationship between humans and machines through the lens of the creative designer. This includes both the impact of AI on design and the role of design in shaping AI systems. Research insights, speculative design scenarios and a framework for developing more ethical AI systems inform an understanding of how design and designer’s might evolve in response to this new context.
