Abstract
The human need for comfort affects every area of life and has prompted many inventions and the development of universal design criteria. This paper explores the foundation of human comfort and the design principles and elements that when implemented appropriately can establish environments that exude comfort for humans within the built environment. The aspects of the built environment that can provide comfort are articulated by the principles and elements of design. By examining the principles and elements of design in relationship to human comfort, design rules can be established. These rules that can govern the selection, composition, and application of the elements and principles of design to create comfort in the built environment are explored in this paper and are referred to as “comfort rules”.
