To Change or Not to Change? : An Experiential Curriculum Exhibition Held by a Non-design-based Academic Department

Abstract

There are more and more academic departments in Taiwan including design-related courses in their curriculum framework. In May 2018, the students of Marketing department in Feng Chia University held a curriculum exhibition – craftsman and craftsmanship – in Taichung 1916 Cultural and Creative Workshop as their final assignment of the third year, which focuses on branding, participator experience design and exhibition design. As a professor in Art and Design teaching in a non-design-led academic department and the leading supervisor of a third-year project funded by Ministry of Education, the author discusses different cultures between different contexts, i.e. non-design/design department in university, possible changes and resistance throughout the curating process. Further, if seeing design activities as the agent for change, what possible changes it may have produced between the collaborators, including Taichung SMEs, 1916 Cultural and Creative Workshop and the department of Marketing in Feng Chia University, especially the members and students within the organization in Marketing department?
