Design and Contemporary Dwelling: Changing Relationships between People, Home, and Things

Abstract

The transience of cultural meanings - intrinsic to the processes of interaction between users and objects - can generate unfavorable perceptions and contribute to the obsolescence throughout the product life cycle. This study identifies transformations in users’ perception of mature products; understands affective relationships between people, places and objects; and strategically rethinks the interaction between them in dynamic contexts of culture and consumption. The theoretical approach is aligned with the notions of Strategic Design and Emotional Design and the focus is the domestic space and textile floor coverings as a case study. The study is divided in three sections: design oriented to contexts in transformation; maturity stage of product life cycle and controversial products; design and emotion in the private sphere of the home. The methodology to develop this qualitative study was based on a literature review in the fields of design, architecture, and social sciences, as well as, electronic tools used to collect primary data. The selection of informants was based on a non-probabilistic sample defined by the researcher’s judgment and later generated by network recruitment. The responses of 163 informants indicated design perspectives to make changeable values of contemporaneity understandable for productive organizations to face turbulent situations. The results pointed out evidence of: (1) the complexity of the relationship between production and consumption of mature goods presents transformations, but also re-signified permanences; (2) the potential for memorable experiences however unfavorable to mature products, can turn into something positive through design-driven stimuli in line with emerging cultural demands.
