Abstract
Istanbul, a city whose components are inevitably and constantly changing and transforming, is patterned together with its urbanites and forms “new ways of life”. As a rapidly changing metropolis, urban dynamics, urban life and therefore “new urban culture”shape everything in istanbul. It makes it inevitable to discuss different lifestyles as a ‘global city’ on the one hand, and a ‘multi-layered and hybrid’ city, on the other, trying to preserve its historical, natural and cultural values. This kind of rapid change in social, cultural and technological developments in the contemporary and pluralistic world has also necessitated a change in the focus of architectural studies. Consequently, it becomes essential to adjust architectural design education accordingly in order to follow these changes. From this point of view, the aim of this paper is to discuss design approaches in architectural design studios applied by the authors, for the studios 401 during 2015-2018 terms at faculty of architecture and design, özyegin university. The concept of “culture-space-place and context” are considered as basic components in these studios as a ‘process oriented’ design studio.
