Evolution of Design Through Traditions in India

Abstract

Design as a specialised field of activity has evolved over a period of time. Design is not about beauty: its problem solving, giving utilitarian and functional solutions, which often need a multi-disciplinary approach. Design transforms the world. If design can change method/process of cooking of food in a certain part of the world, then it changes that part of the world for those people. The global impacts are seen in almost every aspect of design. Most people only see the resulting design feature, global design has roots in many years of historical references and features adopted or evolved through ages. This paper instigates some of the design innovations which are found at the grass root levels of the Indian society, which have evolved through time, practices and sustained through ages. It explores their relevance at the present time, impact on the lifestyle of the users, and future of the design in that context.
