Design Elements and Principles of Timurid Floral Ornaments

Abstract

Abstract floral motifs have long been the fundamental decorative element of all Islamic architectural styles. While there are many similarities and undeniable links between floral motifs in different styles, each era and region have some unique and distinctive visual quality. This research focuses on Timurid architecture as one of the most influential architectural styles in the Middle East and Central Asia. It explores the ornaments of Timurid architectural heritages and investigates three well-surviving monuments of this period as case studies. Floral ornaments of these buildings are extracted and classified chronologically and regionally. Then the formal aspects of these ornaments, including their main elements, proportions, dominant colour, composition, techniques, and so on, have been analysed to describe their aesthetic properties. These aesthetical properties have been used in a further comparative analysis to find regional variations as well as their development over time. Finally, this research defines the design elements and principles of abstract floral ornaments in Timurid architecture upon which researchers can use as a reference to understand the design language of floral motifs in Timurid style. It also facilitates architects and architectural conservators to design flawless and authentic ornaments that are harmonious with projects, which are inspired from this period.
