Prolegomena to an Understanding and Learning Interaction between Craftspeople and Designers: Learning from the Pas and toward Virtuous Futures

Abstract

The situation for the relationship between craftspeople who make buildings and infrastructure and the designers/engineers in the contemporary era of the highly developed and market economy societies is apparently not ideal and seems to be controlled and manipulated by attitudes within the gesselschaft realm, rather than the gemeinschaft realm of human relationships. Since 1992, the author, together with a growing group of designers, master craftspeople and built environment/cultural heritage researchers have been gradually building an informal network across the European and North American geographical space. This discussion session seeks to provide a forum for extending and deepening the understanding of the current situation, find solutions or activities for virtuous transformation, and invite researchers and craftspeople/designers from outside the urbanized market economies to participate in this discussion.
