Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Autism are both general terms for a group of complex conditions of brain development. These conditions are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and repetitive behaviors. It is imperative for designers to empathize and understand how the constructed interiors can affect children with autism to increase their chances of being successful in the environment. This presentation describes a pedagogical approach that was employed to help students explore users’ experience, research, and develop design solutions for the clinic for children with autism in the interior design studio. Overall, this experience increased students’ sensitivity and empathy to challenges and issues in the community, as well as bridging the gap between theory and practice through a design experience in an authentic real-life setting.
