Evaluating Vitality and Physical Factors Using Space Syntax Technique

Abstract

The performance efficiency level of each urban space directly affects behavioral pattern of citizens. A leisure and vital urban space is a place for social relationships, recreation, rest and outdoor recreation for unpredictable and diverse leisure activities. The efficiency of each space has a direct effect on the behavioral patterns of users of that space. This amount varies in a variety of applications and has a different position in design priority. Considering the efficiency of space due to its specific use and creating the maximum performance efficiency in the spatial composition, are the essential requirements of design. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relation between physical factors and factors which increase the vitality, by using space syntax method. Configuration of urban spaces and their effects on individuals activity are represented by using connectivity graphs which is branch of discrete mathematics. At first, the structure of Saqarisazan district, which is located in Rasht, is analyzed by using library studies, axial map, Depthmap software and observation technique such as Gate method to assess the effect of space configuration and physical factors on vitality. At the end, regarding mentioned basics in relation with space and its configuration, the result shows that integration and connectivity factors, 0.85 and 3 respectively, provide less performance efficiency for increasing vitality. In total, due to weakness of mentioned physical factors in Saqarisazan, this district has low quality from vitality view point.
