How to Make a Bikeway Work Best? : A Case Study of Banjir Kanal Timur

Abstract

The bikeway in Banjir Kanal Timur (BKT) was expected to facilitate cyclist in East Jakarta and surrounding areas and to make people want to switch to using this sustainable mode. However, in reality, the bikeway now has diverse functions, such as the entry of motor vehicles and the existence of street vendors, thus illuminating the bikeway’s goal of creating space for bicycles. This research creates alternative priority to increase the level of bicycle service in BKT. Performance in this research consists of the operational performance based on the bikeway geometric and the calculation of the bicycle level of service. The service performance is based on the perception of cyclists’ ratings. The research used includes geometric analysis of the bicycle specific line, connectivity analysis, cycling characteristic analysis, the bicycle level of service analysis, hierarchy process analysis (AHP), and multi-criteria evaluation (MCE). The result showed that there are two segments of the bikeway with a bicycle level of service (BLoS) at an “F,” which is not safe for cycling, while the other segments are still in convenient condition for cycling. In addition, the criteria prioritized in the bicycle optimization performance specific way is safety.
