Breathing Urban Space into the Dhofar Governorate: Jeballi and Badawi People Migrations and Urban-Rural Interchange

Abstract

The town of Salalah in the province of Dhofar, in the period from 1980 to the present, has been recording fast development. This city has become an attractive point for the population of the entire province. The people of Jaballi (who live in the mountainous area), and the people of Badawi (who live in the desert areas of the province), moved to Salalah city in large numbers. After settling, they kept communication with their families in the rural areas. Thanks to communication, the rural space affects the urban and vice versa. There are major changes in two areas: physical and intangible. In the physical area, the organization of rural households, the garden, and the organization-construction-look of the house are effected. In the intangible area the values of the community, the family, the sighting of the neighborhood change, and the street gets a new role in the life of the family are effected. The paper analyzes the material and non-material changes in urban and rural areas that were created due to the fluctuation of the Jaballi and Badawi people between the city and the villages during the last thirty years on the territory of the province of Dhofar, on the example of the city of Salalah.
