Cuban Diaspora in Berlin: Exploring the Material and Immaterial of the Diaspora through Complex Urban Space

Abstract

The plasticity of human interaction is channeled through the malleability of the material and immaterial. This is most evident within immigration and integration. To fully engage with immigration and integration this paper will explore Cuban diaspora in Berlin, Germany. On the one hand, Berlin is a complex geographical space filled with juxtaposing places and identities further expanded through continuous flows of immigration. On the other hand, the Cuban diaspora is an equally complex and evolving group interacting and negotiating their place within this geographically rich environment. The material and immaterial of both diaspora and place come together to channel integration. This paper seeks to introduce the Cuban diaspora in Berlin, explore the diaspora within this urban space, and give a conclusion on its integration.
