The Role of Diaspora in Ethiopia's Inter-Ethnic Conflicts

Abstract

Ethiopia has been grappling with intense conflicts since the fall of the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) in 2018. These conflicts have largely been characterized by inter-ethnic rivalries. The major conflict was the war between the regional government of Tigray and the Government of Ethiopian (GOE) The Tigray War, along with its associated humanitarian crisis, has resulted in the deaths of an estimated 600,000 people. While the Tigray region’s war with the Ethiopian Federal Government (EFG) has yet to be fully documented, another conflict broke out between the government and Fano. Fano, a historical term in Amhara for “freedom fighter,” was a staunch ally of the EFG in the Tigray War. This paper examines the recent conflicts and specifically presents how competing diaspora elements contribute to the volatile situation. The data for this research is based on structured and unstructured interviews conducted in Addis Ababa.
