Music and Gender Diversity: A Case Study

Abstract

This paper looks at gender diversity in music with a focus on the Melbourne-based band Two Steps on the Water. The band was founded in 2014 and is made up of three musicians: lead singer, guitarist and song writer June Jones, violinist, singer, song writer Sienna Thornton, and drummer, singer Jonathan Nash. June Jones is a trans woman who argues for a wider representation of gender diverse musicians, pointing to the need for gender diverse youth to see themselves reflected in the music scene. The paper explores the existential function of music in the case of June Jones.
