India and the New Global Order: India's Role as a Regional Facilitator

Abstract

There has been a paradigm shift in the outlook of American foreign policy towards the new global order. The policy of containment has been substituted by a policy of cooperative diplomacy. Major challenge for the U.S to this new global order seems to emerge from Chinese hegemony in the South China Sea. U.S needs an ally in the eastern world which can use its soft power as well as its emerging strength to counter this. The 2017 National Security Strategy (NSS) document reckons India as a major Strategic and Defense partner of the U.S acknowledging its leadership role in Indian Ocean security. In this context, role of India becomes very crucial. This paper is divided into four sections. The first section looks into the historical significance of India-U.S relations. The next section looks into the current happenings between the two nations. The third section critically analyzes the potential of India to tackle the major regional powers in Asia its worth for the U.S in present political context. The final section concludes the study with a detailed analysis of the new global order and the way forward to this prospering relation.
